What I wore – Cargo Pants

Despite it officially being “summer”, the temperature in has been Sydney fluctuating dramatically between 30C and 21C, often in one day! Today was one of those days where you congratulate yourself for not storing away your trans-seasonal clothes. I spent the with a day with a potential client who wished to add some antique pieces to her dining room. I took her to – you guessed right – The Country Trader, hoping that she would love the silverpalated hotelware from France and crystal cut glassware as much as yours truly.  Since our meeting was more of a field trip rather than a formal meeting, I settled for a casual look but, being an interior stylist, one needs to be aware that one’s image is their brand. It sounds very superficial, and it is; you need to dress to impress. Even if dressed casually, you can still exude your sense of style via shoes, handbag, jewellery etc.

I have a great pair of skinny cargo pants that I bought last autumn, against my regular policy. When my daughter first suggested I try them on, I didn’t like what I saw. I wasn’t sure cargo pants were acceptable for someone my age but the shop assistant, my daughter and another female customer all shouted at me for being silly. They were right – if something fits you well but goes against your usual rules, don’t immediately discard it because there aren’t many labels that cater for the older female market. So I seized the opportunity, bought the pants and am still amazed at how versatile one pair of trousers can be.

I wore them all through last autumn, with a brown leather jacket, chunky heels and silk white shirt. For a more urbane look, I pair them with ballerina flats, a chunky sweater and a cotton scarf.

Getting back to my outfit for the day, I paired the pants with a shimmery knitted top that gave my casual look that little extra something. I accessorized with a silver and leather pendant and a couple of brown and beige bracelets. A classic tote and animal print flats completed the look.
